Photographing the Niagara Falls

When I decided to visit Niagara Falls I knew that I would spend most of my time there taking photos – I wanted to make sure that I had a lot of memories of the vacation and, besides that, photographing something as majestic as the Falls really is quite a privilege. I did some research before I went on the trip to give me some idea of the places that I should head for, but I also spent a lot of time exploring once I was there too. As you can imagine, I took a lot of pictures of the Falls themselves, but I also shot the surrounding area and the various attractions in and around Niagara as well.

I found that I got a lot of my best shots from walking along the river and looking up at the Falls. I parked a little distance upstream which meant that I was able to see some of the river and get some shots here before I actually came across the Falls themselves. I did this on my first day and felt that doing this helped build up the expectation for seeing this natural wonder as I moved closer to them. Whenever I have shown the photos to my family and friends after my trip I have always started the slideshow with the first pictures that I took from this walk along the river. There’s nothing like a little suspense, after all.

There is also a good vantage point for photographs at Queen Victoria Park at the top of the Falls. Not only can you get a good view of the Falls, but the park itself is very attractive and on the day that I spent here, the photos that I took were probably split evenly between the Falls and the park. The part of the park that overlooks the Falls is fairly close to the water so I was able to get some good close up shots of the point where the water begins to descend over the Falls. There are some gardens within the park that have brightly coloured flowers, and I was able to sit and relax here while taking some laidback shots of my surroundings. I did have quite busy days so it was nice to find some time where I could take things a bit more slowly, but still get some good photographs.

For shots of the entire Falls from a distance, I got many good photos from the Skylon Tower. There is an outside area of the observation desk so you do not have to take any photos through the glass – a pet hate of mine. The views that you get from this tower are amazing, so it is well worth a visit. You are some distance away from the Falls themselves which offers you great panoramic views that you just cannot get from the closer viewpoints. This is also a great place to get pictures of the landscapes of both the USA and Canada as you can literally see for miles all around. I stayed at a four star Niagara Falls hotel that was fairly close to the Falls, and this meant that I had more time to spend exploring as I did not have to waste too much time travelling each day. I was able to spend whole days at the Falls which gave me plenty of time to see all the attractions that I wanted to and this allowed me to take advantage of the many photo opportunities that are available in this area. I’d go back in a heartbeat.

Fallsview Casino Park: The closest thing to Horseshoe Falls

Of all the poker joints in the Niagara region, Fallsview Casino Park probably offers the most spectacular view of the famous waterfalls. Overlooking the Horseshoe Falls from a prime position, Fallsview is the biggest and most attractive casino in Niagara. Aside from the state-of-the-art and luxurious facilities and amenities, Fallsview also houses one of the best poker rooms in the area. Whether you prefer the famous Texas Hold’em or other variants like the Omaha or Five-Card Stud, you will always find a piece of the action in Fallsview. However, the casinos has something more to offer other than just regular games.

Because of the casino’s immense popularity, several poker tournaments also happen in the casino, other than their very own weekly tournaments.
